Match Report - v Shrewsbury 99ers

Updated: Jul 8, 2021

We had the pleasure of entertaining Shrewsbury 99ers in our walking football, WFA first round match at Greenfields today.

Firstly, we must thank Mick Murphy and Market Drayton Football Club for allowing us to use their facilities and the magnificent hot buffet provided.

Also meriting a ‘mention in dispatches’ is our own Len Donnelly who’s sterling efforts made this all possible. Thanks Len.

It’s fair to say that Market Drayton struggled somewhat with a stricter application of the rules than that to which we have become accustomed but, having said that, we must thank our referee who gallantly persevered with our misdemeanors.

The match, played in an excellent spirit, ebbed and flowed initially as both teams settled to the task however the 99ers experience of playing in a competitive league, shone through as they were very well organised and set themselves out in a fluid yet structured formation. They made the break through midway into the half when a decisive pass breached our defence and their forward slotted past Pete in goal.

Despite a spirited effort, a second goal was conceded before the break.

The second half proved more competitive as MD pressed the play forcing Shrewsbury into a more defensive position. We had a number of ‘on target’ attempts on goal but their keeper stood his ground to deny us.

Later in the half, we were again stretched by the 99ers’ attack and their striker scored twice as our keeper was left exposed.

Final score 0 - 4 but it was an enjoyable occasion.

Our thanks go to Shrewsbury 99ers and our referee for playing their part in a memorable and entertaining day.

To round events off, post match a few drinks and a buffet were enjoyed by all.
